They want to know how to stand out from the rest and be the biggest brand they can possible be.
That’s what we do here at Annie Jennings PR firm. We build big brands for our clients as that is the key to media success. With millions of authors, not kidding, millions of authors, anyone seeking publicity for their branding, book marketing and book promotion absolutely MUST STAND OUT from the millions.
The answer is that you have to create it for yourself by attracting the media to you. You do this by building up a strong media brand. As a side benefit, while doing this, you create a powerful search engine advantage.
The media have a few ways of locating sources for their articles, news stories or on air coverage and one way is working with trusted publicity firms. Another way is that they might go looking on their own. However, this can be rare as so many “everyone is an expert” sources are out there now so the media has to be especially savvy to pick the right, credentialed and experienced expert. And this takes time. It’s in your benefit to work with a savvy publicist who knows the savvy media but in any event, if the media comes looking and finds you, you have to stand out credibility factors on your website (provable of course – no trickery allowed – you will asked for proof of these media assets). Credibility factors also have to be in your media publicity bio as well. Be sure you update your media bio on your website so you can leverage all of your publicity (but more on this later).
I often say I could write an encyclopedia on everything I know about PR so we always just take it once concept at a time.
Now is the time to be your own publicity and marketing boss. You are responsible for your own publicity and in turn, you are responsible for your own success.
Publicity Success Tip: Probably one of the best tips I can give you other than being a big brand is to believe what you see before your eyes and not what you hear such as “I hear sending out a news release is good”. Good for whom? One client just told me she got nothing from send out a press release via a popular news release service. And the price was high, she said. So look at outcomes. Evaluate the impact of the outcomes on what you want to achieve. Ask yourself “what do I actually get for my money”. Ask yourself, “does this media placement move me closer to my overall goals”?
That’s because we know what we are doing in the publicity game. We have the skills, we have the contacts and we know what mistakes to never make. At our firm, Annie Jennings PR, we use all of our skills to create an outcome for our clients that match their goals. Not just any outcome. A lot of our new clients tell us they were disappointed in their old PR firm or with their own PR efforts in the past because the media bookings they were able to get were meaningless to their overall plan. Many times these clients they tell me nothing even came in for them from all their effort, time, energy and money. It’s just too crowed out there for the previous strategies many used to think worked for them. Now you gotta go ‘one on one’ and have relationships in place.
We secure media placements for what our clients want for themselves as long as it is an outcome that is possible given their expertise, credentials, subject matter and profile of the media outlet.
Real publicity client Andrew tells his real publicity success story working with our firm and says, “I have all this great content and all this great expertise but people don’t know about it yet.” So the first thing we had to do was get attention. Nobody knew me. We started out with radio publicity. It gave me a lot of experience and built up my media bio. The radio appearances get you in the mode and raise your game. It gives you credibility. We are putting it out to our social media too. And that creates excitement and buzz, “hey this guy is in demand”! Next thing Andrew knows is that his career is skyrocketing.
I gotta tell you though, a publicity strategy can be complex. But you don’t always have to know how everything is working for you behind the scenes. That what the publicity professionals do for you – make sure the strategy is working. Your publicists know how to work for your benefit in ways you would not know how to yourself.
Annie says “I have simplified your publicity success strategy by identifying various aspects of publicity that we call our book promotion or publicity wheel strategy. But the strategy, although complex in the approach, can also be easy for you because you can implement each element of the strategy as the time, energy, opportunity and money become available. You may not move as fast as when working with a publicist but you can make progress.
At Annie’s, her publicists go after the outcome with the intention of getting a YES from the media.
They know what the media is going to book and they know how to get you ready for it. This is one of the big reasons authors, experts and speakers pitching themselves has so much trouble doing so. They can’t even get through to the media and their emails may be even be read. A couple of our media contacts tell me they get about one hundred pitches per hour. This make it impossible for them to read, study and evaluate a pitch. The sender maybe perfect for the outlet but just the pure onslaught of pitches can make a qualified source invisible. Except when the pitch comes in from a trusted, respected PR firm with high credibility and a history of success working with the media.
