Ok, although hiring a “newbie” in business make be a good idea if their skill set is a good match for your needs but first very important business culture must be set up in advance. One of the guidelines in the business culture you set up is to avoid making business decisions without permission. Everyone should stay in their lane. Of course, new ideas are always welcome but there should be a format in place to present new ideas with no judgement so the owner of the firm, most likely you, can determine the short, medium and long-term impact based on your knowledge and experience. You will need to have some hands on time with each new hire to be sure that their work falls within the goals and objectives of their position and know that each decision has consequences – some good and sometimes unintended consequences.
This is where the career and business advancement strategy of “surrounding yourself with those smarter than you” can certainly pay off in that this associate will most likely have up to date knowledge and not the older and perhaps out of date dark ages of the internet knowledge. But the one thing they may not have is business savvy.
The idea is to set up a culture where if someone has an idea they run it by you first. This should be a rule that all strategies be identified along with their intended benefit cleared by YOU, the owner, before they are implemented and here’s why, you may and most likely have experience with the marketing idea or decision already and know the downside – that is the unintended consequence. You can put a halt to the strategy or tweak it to better fit the outcome you would like to create for yourself.

Remember, your teams intentions might be in the right place, although something they thought was good in theory and in text-book knowledge, did NOT in reality, contribute to the advancement of your good name, expert status and brand.
So when this situation a good way to manage the learning curve is to identify a “think like a business pro” quick learning session takes place where you take the time to discuss the principles surrounding the decision and why they have not worked in the past and if nothing has changed, will not work now. You do not want others making business choices for you ever. Once you clear a strategy they don’t have to check with again in the near future. You can implement a review session that takes place every couple of months to see what’s still working in the strategy, what’s new in the market place and if any changes should be made.
