Many of our clients are self-published authors. Are you worried that being a self-published author will impact the media’s interest in offering you a media placement?
Annie says, “No, it’s not a problem if other media assets are well developed. It’s not always the name of the publisher that will land you a media booking.”
What are Media Assets? Why do authors need them?
The media has a set of criteria that they apply to each author or expert being considered for a media opportunity with their outlet. This is why it is important to have your media assets in place before you pitch the media.
The first place the media goes when they receive your pitch is to your website. They immediately form a first impression. If it’s good first impression (with a professional look and feel), they will go to the next step. The media will look deeper and review your professional and media bio to determine you are a good match for their booking criteria.
Your most important Media Asset is the quality of your Professional and Media BIO.
Your Professional BIO should be fully developed leading with your most impressive accomplishments and academic achievements. Include your education, experience and companies that you have an association with as long as the companies are established, name brand companies. If not, just create a generic reference such as “consulted with numerous small businesses on these topics. Note where you have experience.
Media Assets consist of many elements. Before we start, a word of warning. Take your time when developing your Media Assets. Keep in mind that you want to get the YES from the media. It’s all too easy to get a NO, especially if you present yourself poorly. The media likes to know the details when you are under review.
Of course, working with a professional PR firm with lots of experience helps you in many ways.
In this example, a respected PR firm would never present a client to the media without absolutely every Media Asset in perfect place.. The media should NEVER have to come back to you and ask you for more information. That simply creates more work for them. A professional publicist would never take that chance because they would lose the respect of the media fast.
Press materials
Media assets consist of well-developed media materials such as your website, social media properties current and optimized and a media page with your media kit. You will also need a high resolution book cover photos and author photos. Always include an up to date media bio of previous media you have done.
It’s important to include the links to the media mentioned in your media bio.
Keep your audio recordings, TV videos and online articles.
The media will preview your audio recordings such as radio and podcast interviews, previous TV appearance videos or links (if any), to online big brand media articles where you were included as the expert commentator (as this showcases your point of view).
They review your previous media to determine if you have the skill set and experience to be a rating bonanza for them.
I have a success tip for you.
If you have to ask a question somewhat like “do you think this is a good radio interview or TV appearance, the answer if in the question. NO. Do not use it. You know when you are good. Always put your best foot forward and look at the interviews that you don’t feel are “good” as a learning experience.
Again, do NOT include any media placements that you feels do not present your point of view, appearance, energy, media skill set in great detail. The media won’t know that it’s an early learning experience for you and might determine you are not the right choice for them.
